神戸は、かつて未来を失った街だ。1995年1月17日に発生した阪神・淡路大震災によって、この街は計り知れないほどの痛みを負った。
その深い衝撃の前と後で、まるで世界はふたつに引き裂かれてしまったかのようだ。震災と、「失われた20年」と呼ばれる日本の長い経済的停滞の時代によって、神戸からは多くの未来が失われることになった。
あるいは、神戸はいつも未来の予感がする街だ。19世紀の開港以来、神戸港に出入りする多くの船舶は、商品とともに、世界中の都市の自由な空気をこの街に運んできた。
高度経済成長期にかけて造られた、沖に浮かぶ二つの人工島や、各地で催された博覧会の記憶は、いまも未来への想像力を刺激し続けている。
あれから25年以上が経ち、世代交代と本格的な都市の再開発によって、失われた未来の痕跡は年々薄れつつある。われわれは、神戸の「ポスト震災」の時間が終わろうとしているという予感の中でこの小さな写真集をつくりはじめた。
記憶の波打ち際では、いまでも失われた未来の残響が寄せては返している。「すでに」と「未だ」という時の狭間で収められたこれらの風景が、過去を記憶し、渺茫（びょうぼう）とした未来へと神戸の新たな魅力を伝えてくれることを願っている。

Kobe is a city that lost its future once. The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 17 January 1995 caused immeasurable pain in the city.
It was as though the world had been torn in two - before and after that deep shock. The disaster and Japan's long period of economic stagnation, known as the ‘lost 20 years’, have left Kobe with much of its future lost.
Kobe has always been a city with a sense of the future. Since its establishment in the 19th century, the numerous ships that have come and gone from the port of Kobe have brought with them goods together with the air of freedom from cities around the world.
The memories of the two artificial islands floating offshore and the expositions held in various places during the period of rapid economic growth still stimulate the imagination of the future.
More than 25 years have passed since 1995, and with the change of generations and the full-scale redevelopment of the city, the traces of a lost future are fading year by year. It is with the feeling that Kobe's ‘post-earthquake’ time is coming to an end that we have started to make this small book of photographs.
At the edge of the waves of memory, the reverberations of a lost future still break at the shore. We hope that these landscapes, captured in the space between the time already gone and the time not yet in being, will convey the memories of the past and the charm of Kobe to a future that is boundless.
